Add Salalah if you can give both the journey and the stay the time you want. Keep the long coastal route when its stops are part of the holiday; otherwise, compare a shorter trip or a date-confirmed flight with local transport before committing.

Work Out Your Usable Time in Salalah
Start with your arrival and departure clock times. Allow for the outward and return journeys, the stops you want to make, local transfers and the rest your group needs between driving spells. Compare the time left in Salalah with what you want to do there. Another traveller’s five- or six-day plan does not set the threshold for yours.
For the Muscat–Sur–Duqm–Shuwaymiyah–Salalah coastal route, check each intended leg and add your stops and rest allowance before relying on the total. The undated Mwasalat Route 100 timetable concerns an inland bus journey; it cannot provide a private-car estimate for this coastal road, and its current operation would need checking with Mwasalat.
For a flying option, obtain a schedule and fare for your dates, then check the airline’s and departure airport’s check-in, bag-drop and boarding requirements. Include transfers at both ends. The Civil Aviation Authority’s khareef 2026 announcement covered seasonal plans by Oman Air and SalamAir; those past operating periods do not establish the flights available for your trip.
Plan the Salalah transfer as part of that total. The airport lists an airport–city Mwasalat bus at 30-minute intervals, subject to change. A hotel or tour-operator courtesy bus must be arranged directly with that hotel or operator before travel.
What the Season Decides, and What It Leaves Open
Dhofar’s khareef usually falls between 21 June and 21 September. The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism describes cloudy, rainy weather and moderate temperatures, with cooler conditions in the mist-covered mountains. This is the normal seasonal pattern, not a forecast for a particular week. If greenery or waterfalls are the reason for a later trip, check their condition close to your dates rather than assuming the monsoon landscape will remain.
Coastal scenery and beach activities need separate decisions. Oman Meteorology identifies rough Arabian Sea conditions as a feature of the summer monsoon. That seasonal pattern establishes neither conditions after the monsoon nor a swimming rule for an individual beach. For swimming and access around Salalah or Shuwaymiyah, check current Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority and Royal Oman Police notices, along with on-site signs. Confirm camping permission or permit requirements for Shuwaymiyah and other Dhofar or Al Wusta beaches with the responsible municipality.
Let the purpose of the visit guide the choice: a trip centred on monsoon scenery depends on seasonal expectations, while a coastal trip still needs date-specific checks for the activities you want. Neither choice comes with a promise of greenery, safe swimming or permission to camp.
Three Trip Shapes for a Short Holiday
| Trip shape | Fits when | Confirm before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the coastal round trip | The drive and its stops — Sur, Duqm, Shuwaymiyah — are a substantial part of the holiday’s purpose | Your own door-to-door hours and rest allowance; rental terms for every road you intend to use |
| Shorten the route, or stay in the north | The verified travel burden leaves too little Salalah time for the group’s priorities | What you give up; time any northern alternative on your own route rather than assuming a figure |
| Fly to Salalah and travel locally | A flight confirmed for your dates plus local transport fits the holiday better than driving the whole way | Schedule and fare for your dates; check-in and transfer time; whether a local hire car or a local transfer suits the plan |
Treat time spent travelling according to what you want from the holiday. The coastal stops can be worthwhile activities in their own right; if they mainly stand between you and Salalah, compare the complete alternative before committing. A flight’s airport and transfer time still belongs in that comparison.
Compare the versions you would actually book, with the same holiday needs included:
- Time: outward and return travel, planned stops, local journeys and recovery. For flying, include airport, boarding and transfer time at both ends as well as the flight itself.
- Cost: fares where relevant, plus each plan’s car hire, fuel, local transport, applicable agreed drop-off costs and nights spent en route. A fly-and-rent plan needs its local rental and fuel costs included too.
Use quotes and schedules for your dates. Compare the complete totals before deciding whether flying saves you time or money and which plan best fits your priorities.
Rental Terms to Settle Before You Commit
Confirm the intended return location with the rental supplier. Sixt permits one-way rentals between its Oman locations under tariff-dependent conditions and may charge an additional fee for an “unannounced and unauthorised” one-way rental. Ask whether your intended drop-off is approved and what the agreed tariff will cost.
Check the included kilometres and any charge for exceeding them against the route you plan. Sixt’s general Oman information gives no mileage allowance or per-kilometre rate, so use the terms of the actual booking. For another supplier, check that supplier’s own quote. The airport’s car-rental listing does not determine those terms.
Check permitted roads and protection as well as vehicle size. Under Sixt’s terms, driving through wadis and sand dunes is restricted for its AWD SUVs, while those vehicles are allowed at the tourist points at Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams. Breaching its territorial restrictions voids all protections. This is a Sixt-specific example: confirm that your own agreement permits the coastal or mountain roads you intend to use. An SUV label alone does not settle that question.
If you fly and rent locally, Salalah Airport has rental counters on level zero and recommends reserving before arrival, especially for SUVs. Arrange the vehicle and transfer around the flight you have actually confirmed, then compare the complete plan with your road-trip option.
