Use app-booked taxis for Muscat city legs. For Wadi Shab and Bimmah, choose a prearranged round trip with the return confirmed, or a rental for independent timing. Rent only if legal permission to drive and the supplier's acceptance are both settled.

Muscat city legs: fare first, route names as leads
For a short stay based in Muscat, city sightseeing usually comes down to a series of short legs rather than one route. OTaxi rides in Muscat can be booked through the Yango app, the fare is shown before you book, and you can pay in cash or by card. That makes the app a reasonable default for hops such as the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Mutrah and Al Alam Palace: you see each leg’s price before committing.
Book each leg with the pickup and destination you actually want, and treat the quoted fare as covering that trip. If you want the car to wait while you walk Mutrah Corniche or to come back at a set time, agree that with the driver before the ride begins and confirm how it is charged. The app’s Muscat coverage also does not establish that a car will be available at your exact pickup point at a particular hour, so for an early start or a property off the main road, check in the app in good time rather than assuming.
A public bus is the other city option to check. Mwasalat, the national bus operator, publishes scheduled Muscat city routes, including Route 4 between Ruwi Bus Station and Al Alam Palace. The route name is a starting point, not a plan: it does not tell you the stop list, timetable, frequency, operating hours or fare, and it is not established whether any route serves the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Mutrah Corniche or Souq, or a particular hotel. To test a hotel-to-attraction leg, check the nearest stop to your accommodation, a departure that fits your day and the fare, then decide whether the wait and the walk at the other end suit you.
The coast is a separate arrangement: app coverage in Muscat does not establish a ride to Wadi Shab.
The Wadi Shab and Bimmah day: settle the whole loop before paying
Bimmah Sinkhole and Wadi Shab lie south of Muscat along the coast, and the return leg matters as much as the outbound one. Muscat Smart Tours advertises an 8–9 hour Wadi Shab and Bimmah Sinkhole day tour from Muscat, with an English-speaking driver-guide, pickup from approved Muscat hotels (or pickup and return at Muscat Cruise Port), and a final stop described as a return to Muscat with drop-off at the original pickup area. Its booking panel quotes a total price for a private group of up to seven travellers. That is one operator’s advertised offer, not a held booking, and not a description of every Wadi Shab tour; the price appears only once traveller numbers are selected.
Confirm in writing that your hotel is approved for pickup; an Al Khuwair address alone does not establish that. The operator’s page gives conflicting descriptions, so ask it to confirm whether the quoted total buys a private vehicle for your group or a shared ride, whether the Wadi Shab boat crossing is included, and whether your booking is confirmed instantly or requires manual confirmation.
The cancellation terms are specific: a full refund for cancellation at least 24 hours before the confirmed pickup or departure time, no refund for later cancellations or no-shows, and rescheduling or a refund if the operator cancels for weather, safety or operational reasons. The refund mechanics refer to the booking terms, so keep those with your confirmation.
The day is a hike as much as a drive. The operator’s route runs south along the coast to Bimmah Sinkhole, then to Wadi Shab, where a small boat crosses the entrance and a 45–60 minute walk each way through the canyon leads to the natural pools. Good mobility and suitable footwear matter on uneven, sometimes slippery ground, and swimming is at each guest’s own ability and risk. Water levels, weather and local restrictions can change access to the final pools and the cave; cave access is not guaranteed, and the tour may be changed or cancelled in unsafe weather or when flash floods are a risk. Bimmah Sinkhole access is described as free, subject to opening conditions. Stop durations are planning estimates, not guaranteed times.
If you arrange a driver directly instead, make the return part of the same agreement; an outbound ride is not a booking for the trip back.
Before choosing a rental: permission first, then the quote
Renting for the Wadi Shab day raises two separate questions: whether you may drive in Oman on your licence, and whether a rental company will rent to you on your documents. Clearing one does not clear the other.
The Royal Oman Police FAQ addresses how long a visitor may use their own country’s driving licence. It says that a person can drive in Oman as long as they hold a visit visa valid for three months, and that anyone intending to reside must obtain an Omani licence. Treat that as a narrow answer to a narrow question. The FAQ is undated, and it does not settle whether your country’s licence is recognised, whether an International Driving Permit or a translation is needed, or whether your entry route — visa-free or another visit type — falls within the three-month wording. Confirm those points for your own nationality and entry route before you rely on the FAQ.
SIXT’s Oman conditions are a supplier example, not the national rule. The minimum age is 21, with at least one year’s licence held; a young-driver surcharge applies under 25; some car categories have a higher minimum age; and a full valid driver’s licence plus a passport or identity card is required at pickup. The page does not settle whether SIXT accepts a particular foreign licence or requires an International Driving Permit, so ask the supplier directly. SIXT also says rules vary by country, so check the chosen supplier’s own conditions.
Payment and protection carry their own conditions. SIXT accepts all major credit cards and does not accept prepaid or debit cards; that is this supplier’s rule, not a general one. Protection packages are optional; they are offered to reduce your liability, not required to rent. The rate, deposit, excess or liability amount, mileage allowance and fuel policy need a dated quote for the specific vehicle, dates and branch.
Cancellation depends on the rate. The free-cancellation option is Pay on Arrival; for any other rate, including prepaid, check the cancellation terms before you book. Oman reservations can be modified, extended or cancelled through the manage-booking section or the app.
Rental earns its place when control is the point of the day: starting when you like, staying longer at Bimmah or at the pools, and not fitting a group’s timetable. In exchange, you do the driving, and the deposit and any excess or liability exposure are yours to manage. The eligibility and document checks above are yours to complete before the trip.
Comparing the three options for the same day and party
| Option | What you arrange | What the quote must state | Confirm before you commit |
|---|---|---|---|
| City app taxi (Yango OTaxi) | Each leg separately; fare shown before booking; cash or card | The pickup-to-drop-off fare for that trip | That a car can reach your exact pickup at the time you want; whether waiting or a fixed return pickup can be arranged, and on what terms |
| Prearranged coastal driver or tour | The whole day with one provider before you travel | Agreed pickup and drop-off, the Bimmah and Wadi Shab stops, waiting, and the return | That your actual hotel or port is a pickup point; what the total includes; the cancellation terms |
| Rental car | A vehicle for the day to drive yourself | Payable rental charges; deposit or guarantee requirement stated separately; excess or liability exposure and optional protection cost | That the chosen supplier accepts your licence, age and card; the cancellation terms for your rate |
For the coastal day, compare a prearranged driver or tour with a rental on one date, with the same party size and the same stops at Bimmah Sinkhole and Wadi Shab. Ask whether each figure is per vehicle or per person, so the numbers describe the same scope.
