A long Muscat layover can suit airside rest, a landside hotel or a short visit, but the checks differ. Confirm entry eligibility before going landside, check access with the airside hotel or lounge, and plan around every applicable flight deadline—not just departure time.

Check entry eligibility before going landside
Before you plan a hotel outside the airport or a city visit, work out which entry rules apply to your passport. The Foreign Ministry says visitors from more than 100 countries and regions are exempt from entry visas for stays of up to 14 days, divided into a first and a second group; the United States is in the first group and in Royal Oman Police List No. (1). A listing applies to the passport it names and does not guarantee admission, so it does not settle the position of any other traveller.
The exemption comes with conditions that a visa-free visitor has to meet: a passport valid for at least six months, a return ticket, a confirmed hotel reservation, health insurance and enough money for living costs. Two applications matter for a layover and are not settled by the published controls: whether an onward ticket to a third country satisfies the “return ticket” condition, and whether a same-day visit with no overnight stay still needs a hotel booking. The Royal Oman Police (ROP), which manages visitor visas, is the authority to confirm both: 24353411 for airport visa and immigration issues; the eVisa call centre is 80080011 inside Oman and +968 22848200 from outside.
Passports in the second group qualify only with residence in, or a valid entry visa for, the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, a Schengen country or Japan, or with GCC residence in a qualifying profession. If your passport is in neither group, or the second-group conditions are not met, start at the ROP eVisa website, where the Tourist Visit Visa (Unsponsored) is usually the right type for tourists. Some nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival; confirm that eligibility with your airline or the ROP before travelling, because anyone who is not eligible must arrange a visa in advance.
For the daytime example below, a traveller with a US passport would be checking a first-group exemption plus the ticket, hotel, insurance and funds conditions. An onward visa or document for the next country is a separate matter from Oman entry, and holding one does not settle the Oman side. The overnight example leaves nationality unspecified, so the US listing cannot be assumed to apply; that traveller has to run the same check on their own passport, and on the eVisa route if the exemption does not apply.
Rest options: airside room, lounge or landside hotel
The rest decision is about where you can stay and what kind of rest you need. Three options have published detail, and they are not interchangeable.
| Option | Where and who | What you get | Charge or minimum | Still to confirm |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aerotel Muscat | Airside, Level 5 within Departures in the secured area; guests need a valid boarding pass and travel document | Hourly or overnight booking; 90 rooms with power showers and complimentary Wi-Fi; Flight Club restaurant (07:00–23:00) for in-house guests | Minimum stay 1 hour; room rate not stated | Rate and availability; airline check-in, boarding pass and baggage handling during transit |
| Primeclass Lounge | Fifth floor of the Departure area after immigration; first- or business-class passengers on contracted airlines, holders of Priority Pass, LoungeKey, Lounge Pass or Diners Club cards, certain local bank cards, or walk-in payment | Showers and a relaxing zone; private suites subject to availability; spa at extra charge | OMR 25 including VAT per person for 3 hours; children 0–2 free | Availability, eligibility for longer use and its charge — it is not a hotel room |
| Swiss-Belinn Airport Muscat | Landside at Al Anwar Street, Azaiba, outside the terminal; reaching it means clearing arrival immigration | Room at a 4-star hotel | Room rate and any day-use rate not stated | Short-stay availability, shuttle, check-in/out times, journey time and the return to the terminal |
Aerotel’s guest notice is the detail that changes sequencing. It advises transiting passengers not to leave the transit area or clear arrival immigration, and says re-entry into the transit area is not allowed without an onward boarding pass. That is guidance to its own guests rather than a published airport-wide rule, but it is a reason to settle the airside-or-city choice before going through immigration. The hotel also says it cannot retrieve checked luggage and directs transit guests to their airline for check-in, boarding passes and baggage; guests coming from the city are told to check the airline’s advance check-in policy, which differs between carriers.
Choose between a private hotel room and lounge access according to the rest you need. Confirm any longer lounge visit with the operator before relying on it. If you choose the landside hotel, allow for arrival immigration on the way out and all applicable departure steps on the way back; having valid travel documents for the departures hall does not settle your airline’s check-in or baggage requirements.
What the mosque window does to each plan
The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque has published visitor hours, and they are narrow. Oman’s official tourism site welcomes non-Muslim visitors from Saturday to Thursday, 8:00 to 11:00, with modest dress; admission is OMR 8, and appropriate coverings can be provided on site. Friday is excluded and the visitor window does not begin before 8:00. Holiday and date-specific closures are not listed, so the travel date has to be rechecked.
| Plan | Airport times | Grand Mosque visitor window | What that means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daytime | Arrive 12:00; depart 02:25 the following morning | 12:00 is already past the 11:00 close, and any later window opens after the 02:25 departure | The mosque window does not fit this plan |
| Overnight | Arrive 00:30; depart 14:00 the same day | A visit between 8:00 and 11:00 could fall before a 14:00 departure, on a Saturday–Thursday and subject to date-specific closures | Possible on an eligible day, conditional on entry, rest, transport and flight handling |
For the overnight example, decide how much sleep you need before planning a morning visit. Check the travel date and transport in both directions, then test the outing against your airline’s deadlines. Do not treat a generic suggestion to return two hours before departure as the requirement for your flight.
Getting out and back depends on transport that runs at the hour you need it. Airport taxis are available through the Oman Airport taxi office in the public arrivals hall and from the taxi area just outside the main terminal; the airport requires taxis to use meters for price regulation, but describes that under travel to the airport, so fares in the other direction still need checking. Mwasalat public buses leave from a bus station on the ground floor outside the airport building, but routes, frequencies and operating hours are not given, so overnight and early-morning service has to be checked with the operator. Journey times are not given for either mode. Confirm the availability and price of the taxi journeys you would actually need, particularly overnight.
Building the return time that applies to your flight
Ask the operating airline which steps remain for your connection: whether you already have the onward boarding pass, how checked baggage is handled, and whether you must use a check-in or bag-drop counter. Obtain every applicable closing time and the boarding-gate deadline, as well as any restriction on how early you can check in. None of those flight-specific times is established for the two examples above.
Work backwards from each deadline separately, allowing time for all the tasks still required to meet it. A check-in or bag-drop calculation must include the journey back, the relevant queue and the time needed to finish that task. A gate calculation must also account for any earlier tasks still outstanding, security and the walk to the gate. Compare the resulting times to leave the city or hotel and use the more conservative one, with contingency for delays. Merely choosing the earliest clock deadline is not enough: the steps and time needed to meet each deadline can differ. These are planning estimates, not confirmed processing times or a guaranteed latest departure time.
Muscat Airport confirms that departing passengers undergo security screening. Passing that check does not replace completing any required check-in or baggage steps, or reaching the gate before it closes. For the actual day and hour, check transport availability and estimate journey, queue and processing time; no fixed buffer fits every connection. If those uncertainties leave too little reliable time, do not build the city visit around a best-case journey.
Airside rest avoids the journey back from the city, but you still need access to the chosen hotel or lounge and must meet your flight obligations. For a departure in the small hours, confirm counter hours and any late-night check-in arrangement before booking a landside stay. For an afternoon departure, protect enough time for sleep, any visit and all remaining airport steps.
