Compare written package quotes for the same Muscat dates. Book ahead when a supplier confirms a 4WD and rooftop-tent setup you can accept; renting after arrival is an option if you can accept alternatives or change your plans. The offers compared here establish no price or availability advantage for either approach.

What one quote has to cover
A Muscat camping car rental can be quoted as a tent added to a vehicle or as one combined package. Oman Car Hire takes the first route: its Double Roof Top Tent requires an SUV, measures 140 cm by 190 cm and sleeps 2 adults. Its published charges are 20 OMR for one-time installation and 22 OMR per day for the tent, listed separately from the vehicle. The vehicle rate is not shown on that page, and the page does not say whether those tent charges include VAT. A tent figure of that kind is not a car-and-tent total, so the first question is what the vehicle itself costs on the same dates.
Nomad Tours sells a combined package instead. Its Double tent is a hard-shell rooftop tent that sleeps 2 adults, and the package comprises the car, the tent, a camping kit and Basic cover at one seasonal rate plus 5% VAT, with a second driver and unlimited kilometres included and a minimum of four days. That is a published package description, not a date-specific quote or a promise of availability, so treat the seasonal rate as the structure of an offer and ask for the figure for your own dates.
The tent’s sleeping capacity and the vehicle’s drive type need separate confirmation. Oman Car Hire’s stated requirement is an SUV, which does not by itself establish four-wheel drive. Ask for the make and model, confirmation that the vehicle has the four-wheel drive you require, and the model of tent that will be fitted. Both tents described here sleep two adults, so a larger group needs a different configuration rather than an extra sleeping bag.
Equipment is the third element. Oman Car Hire includes essential camping equipment with the Double Roof Top Tent free of charge for 2 adults, among it sleeping bags, a camping mat, chairs and a table. Nomad Tours says every tent comes with a camping kit including a cool box, a water jerry can, a pressurised hot-water shower, a shovel, a gas stove with gas bottle and kitchen utensils. Ask for the full list in the quote rather than assuming the two kits match.
Inclusion is not cover if an item is lost or damaged; the protection terms, not the kit list, determine who pays, so confirm that point with the supplier.
Same dates, same total: the fields to compare
Compare two written totals for identical pickup and return dates and times, because suppliers count rental days differently. Oman Car Hire calculates rental periods per calendar day, and late returns may incur additional charges; extensions must be approved in advance and are subject to availability. Nomad Tours’ general car-rental terms also charge per calendar day, with the full daily rate applying whatever the pickup or drop-off time, and its package has a four-day minimum. iDrive4x4 counts Oman rental days per 24 hours from the start time and sets a three-day minimum. A period that begins in the afternoon and ends in the morning can therefore attract different day counts depending on who is pricing it, so ask each supplier how many chargeable days your exact period creates before comparing totals.
Next, establish what sits inside the daily rate. Nomad’s package includes a second driver and unlimited kilometres. Oman Car Hire’s terms say some rentals include unlimited mileage while others carry limits specified at booking, and that the vehicle should be returned at the fuel level provided, with refuelling charges possible otherwise. Price the extras you actually need into the same request: Nomad lists an off-road recovery kit at 5 OMR per day, child seats at 2 OMR per day and walkie-talkies at 1 OMR per set per day, all plus 5% VAT.
Handover belongs in the quote as well. Nomad’s package pickup and return are free at the Nomad Guest House in Muscat between 08:00 and 18:00, with a 25 OMR plus VAT charge outside those hours, and it does not hand over at the airport. Ask every other supplier where and when the vehicle and tent will be handed over and what an out-of-hours collection costs. Where a figure is not published, the answer is unknown, not zero.
Deposits need their own lines because they are refundable amounts, not rental charges. Oman Car Hire requires a refundable security deposit of 100 OMR in person at vehicle pickup, whatever insurance plan is chosen, including Adventurer Protection; it is held for up to 30 days after return to cover traffic fines, damages, fuel shortages or other charges, with deductions taken from it and any balance refunded. Nomad Tours also states a 100 OMR security deposit paid at pick-up by cash or any card, and its car-rental payment policy describes that deposit as covering possible speeding or parking fines, which may only be notified after the car is returned. iDrive4x4 separates an equipment deposit, returned within 30 days after the trip if everything comes back in good condition, from a 250 OMR pre-authorization for Oman car rental paid to its local partner for vehicle damage or traffic fines and released six weeks after the trip; the equipment deposit amount is not stated there and the local partner is not named, so ask for both.
A deposit is not part of the price, and it is not a ceiling on what you can owe for excluded damage. Track the amount, holder and release timing alongside the price rather than folding it in, and ask what may be deducted.
A written request covering the following fields will give you answers you can compare line by line.

Whether the camping drive and its losses are covered
Permission to drive off paved roads is a contract term, not only a question of vehicle capability. Oman Car Hire’s terms state that vehicles must not be used for off-road driving unless approved and rented specifically for that purpose, giving 4x4s as an example, and that the renter is responsible for fines, damages or violations during the rental, including damage not covered by insurance or caused by negligence. The same terms say optional full coverage must be requested before the rental begins. Nomad Tours allows off-road driving on approved routes, which for every package include the Wahiba Sands; it describes the Explorer (Mitsubishi ASX) as fine on sand on approved routes but not for desert crossings, and excludes Barr Al Hikman, the Bilad Sayt-Shorfet Al Alamin hill, flowing wadis, the Salma Plateau and dune bashing.
Name your intended routes when you request the quote and get the approved list in writing. A vehicle that can physically reach a place is not necessarily permitted to, and the exclusions above sit outside the protection even where a route is allowed.
The covered-loss examples apply only to a loss the chosen package covers, and each comes with a reporting condition. Oman Car Hire’s insurance page says damage within the selected package’s cover costs the renter only the package excess, and that the insurance pays the remainder once a valid police report is provided; its example figure is 500 OMR under Basic. In its FDW example, the renter pays 0 OMR for covered off-road suspension and underbody damage once a police report and a vehicle inspection are completed. The exclusions decide what those examples never reach: for CDW and SCDW, tyres, glass and undercarriage, negligent or reckless driving, driving under the influence, prohibited areas such as deep sand dunes, water crossings or unapproved off-road tracks, lost keys and misfuelling; for FDW, reckless off-road driving, deliberate misuse, deep-sand dune bashing, water immersion, driving under the influence, negligence or breach of the rental agreement. A valid police report does not turn an excluded loss into a covered one.
Nomad’s protection tiers show why the label alone is not enough. Basic is included and covers CDW, theft and third party with a 500 OMR excess; Extended adds 5 OMR per day plus VAT and lowers the excess to 300 OMR; Adventurer adds 10 OMR per day plus VAT and carries no excess, with tyres, glass and underbody covered only under Adventurer. Yet Nomad’s general car-rental terms state, without qualifying by tier, that windscreen and tyre damage is not covered and that tyre puncture repair is at the lessee’s cost. That difference between the package page and the general terms is unresolved, so confirm it in writing for the specific booking rather than inferring cover from the tier name. A no-excess tier is not a promise that everything is covered either: the exclusions still apply, and a deposit is not a liability ceiling.
Two points still need written answers for your booking. Ask both suppliers whether damage to or theft of the rooftop tent and camping kit is covered under the tier you choose; the terms described here address the vehicle, and equipment cover should not be inferred from the package label. Recovery is also not a universal free rescue. Oman Car Hire states 24/7 roadside assistance across Oman and, for Adventurer Package customers, off-road recovery within 50 km of paved roads, with additional towing fees possible beyond that distance; what Basic or Extended customers receive should be confirmed. Nomad’s general terms describe help when an accident leaves the vehicle immovable, with additional service costs possible because of transport from Muscat, and limited towing included in the insurance costs with part of the charge possibly borne by the lessee depending on location. That is an accident response, not a general breakdown or stuck-vehicle service.
The reporting condition applies throughout. Oman Car Hire requires every accident, theft or damage to be reported immediately to the company and the local police, and states that failure to obtain a police report may void insurance coverage.
Booking ahead or deciding on arrival
For its package bookings, Nomad Tours holds the full amount on the customer’s card without charging it and says it replies within 24 hours. That reply is not a confirmation deadline. The booking is confirmed only when the hold is captured and a booking reference is issued; if the car is not available, Nomad offers a different car or cancels and releases the hold. The customer can withdraw and have the hold released before confirmation, and the cancellation policy applies once the booking is confirmed. Nomad’s general car-rental terms separately state that 100% payment is required to confirm a booking; the package page treats that amount as held and captured on confirmation.
Those steps are Nomad’s package procedure. Do not assume another supplier confirms on the same event: ask what confirms the booking, when the card is charged, what happens if the exact car or tent is unavailable, and what the cancellation terms are, then get the answers in writing. A willingness to accept a substitute is not a confirmed booking unless the supplier has committed to that alternative on stated terms.
Oman Car Hire gives no refund if you do not collect the car, return it early or leave rental days unused, unless a different arrangement is agreed in writing. This does not establish its ordinary cancellation fees before pickup; request those separately.
The offers compared here do not establish whether either approach is cheaper or better stocked. Oman Car Hire’s tent page gives no date-specific stock, and Nomad’s package description is not a dated quote. For an advance booking, obtain confirmation of the vehicle and tent you can accept, together with the substitution and cancellation terms. Without written confirmation of the vehicle and tent, you still face the risk that your preferred setup will be unavailable. If arranging it on arrival, be ready to accept an alternative or change your plans.
